Oil Sands

Alberta’s oil sands are abundant, accessible, and affordable sources of crude oil. They are also attracting global attention.

Alberta Energy facilitates the development of Alberta’s oil sands and manages the Crown’s interest in oil sands, including land tenure and royalty programs, on behalf of all Albertans.

We also work with other government departments and industry towards the resolution of business and strategic issues.

Tenure

Tenure is the process of leasing and administering petroleum and natural gas (P&NG) rights owned by the Province of Alberta. Companies are granted the right to explore for and develop P&NG resources, in exchange for the value to Albertans that flows from development in the form of royalties, bonus bid payments and rents. Read more
